La entrega con fines de extradición, se hizo ante funcionarios de la Administración de Control de Drogas (DEA), en la base aérea Hernán Acosta Mejía, de la capital de la República, quienes después de completar el trámite que establecen los tratados, trasladaron al requerido en una aeronave del Departamento de Justicia de los Estados Unidos, que despegó del aeropuerto Toncontín.
Hasta hoy, Santos Tobar permaneció bajo detención preventiva en las instalaciones del Primer Batallón de Infantería, tras su captura el pasado 23 de agosto de 2021, en un sector del municipio de El Paraíso, en el departamento occidental de Copán.
Un Juez Natural de Primera Instancia de la Corte Suprema de Justicia, autorizó la entrega a petición del Gobierno estadounidense por delitos relacionados a la conspiración para fabricar cinco kilogramos de cocaína, con la intención de ingresarla y distribuirla ilegalmente a territorio norteamericano; medida que fue confirmada por el pleno de magistrados.
Con la extradición de hoy, Santos Tobar se convirtió en el vigésimo noveno hondureño en ser entregado a la justicia internacional. Aun se cuenta con siete personas más que guardan prisión a la espera de completarse su proceso de entrega.
