Santa Barbara Honduras …Uno de los principales problemas sociales de Honduras es el trabajo infantil, el cual es realizado por niños y niñas de todas las edades del campo y la ciudad. Siendo Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula, Choloma y Ceiba los que mas niños tienen trabajando en las calles y en negocios.
La necesidad de llevar dinero al hogar obliga a miles de niños hondureños abandonar sus centros educativos, irse a las calles a buscar la forma de hacer un trabajo y ganar algo de dinero para poder ayudar a la economía del hogar.
Actualmente en Honduras hay más de 400,000 niños trabajando tanto en el campo como en la ciudad, en trabajos informales situación que viola los derechos de los trabajadores. las edades de estos niños son de 6 a 17 años.
Los trabajos que realizan en la ciudad son vender agua, ropa, cosméticos, dulces, frutas, comida y lustrar zapatos en lugares públicos. En el campo los niños se dedican a la agricultura, cuidar ganado, cerdos, granjas avícolas o trabajan en haciendas. Otros niños en menor cantidad trabajan en la construcción y en fábricas de manufactura y las niñas en casas como domésticas.
En las zonas rurales que más trabajan los niños son en la región sur con la siembra y cosecha del melón, sandías y cítricos, en la zona occidental con el corte de café y en la región del atlántico en la pesca.
Otros niños trabajan limpiando vidrios de carros y de oficinas, en lugares de lavado de autos, ayudantes de bus, meseros y ayudantes de cocina, otros trabajan en las calles como payasos, hacer piruetas y malabares en los semáforos y otros son obligados a pedir en las calles.
Otra situación muy común es que los padres los dejan cuidando a la casa y los demás niños más menores mientras ellos trabajan en la empresa privada y las mujeres en casas, restaurantes y algunas veces en pequeños negocios propios de frutas, golosinas, chicleras y en los mercados de las ciudades.
Estos niños y niñas al trabajar en la calle se exponen a muchos riesgos y peligros como ser explotación sexual, discriminación, asaltos, insultos y explotación laboral ya que la UNICEF marca el trabajo infantil como una explotación.
