Cabe mencionar que la mayoría de campesinos independientes siembran sin las técnicas agrícolas para el cultivo de granos básicos, esto debido que son familias pobres, únicamente siembran estos granos y a esperar que las lluvias sean constantes para obtener una buena producción.
Los municipios con mayor producción de maíz en el departamento de Santa Bárbara son: Ceguaca, Gualala, San Pedro Zacapa, San Vicente Centenario, Arada, Concepción sur, entre otros, en la mayoría de ellos, las familias producen el maíz para consumo en el hogar y alimentar animales como gallinas, cerdos y vacas en menor escala.
